GF Batter – Fish and Chips Delivered

I first saw a pamphlet for GF batter at one of the shops that offers gluten free fish and chips. For a while now I knew that they offered gluten free batter. However, they also offer home delivery of gluten free fish and chips for Melbourne. Potato cakes, calamari rings, pumpkin fritters, and hot dogs in batter all ready to pop in the oven, air fryer or deep fryer to enjoy at home. Since the closest fish and chip shop that does gluten free is outside my 5km I have definitely been missing my fish and chip nights. Thankfully, GF Batter delivers not only to my work suburb but to my home suburb as well. Most of the packs are around the $11-$15 mark depending on what you get. They do have a portion of chips for under $5.

I had to try one of everything, grabbing a fish and chip pack, potato cakes, calamari rings, prawns, pumpkin fritters, and hot dogs in batter. In terms o the allergens, all are in their gluten free batter mix which contains no majors. However, the squid, fish, prawns all contain fish and crustacean. The potato cakes contain sulphites and the hot dogs in batter contain soy. The mix does contain xanthan gum as well tapioca, rice, maize, besan and potato flavour/starches. I personally, chose to use my air fryer at 180 for the times recommended on the website. It might seem odd but the most exciting thing for me was having them provide butcher paper and lemon for a real fish and chips experience. It is the little touches like that which go a long way.

The batter itself is light, crispy and crunchy. It has a good flavour, exactly what you’d expect. The only two little snags I personally hit were that I over cooked the calamari. So do watch the time with that. Additionally, we found the pumpkin fritter to be a little watery. If you are looking for strong flavoured prawns, these will definitely hit the spot. As for the hot dog in batter, it’s a hot dog in batter what do you want me to say? I am grateful that GF Batter are bringing gluten free fish and chips to homes around Melbourne especially now.

For Brody and myself, we enjoy the fish and chip pack which is plenty with a side salad. The pack of potato cakes is probably another must have for us as well. The others are all rarer treats that will be great every once in a while. For those who are more interested in the GF Batter mix which ships Australia wide, I’ll review that in the near future. If you are looking for gluten free fish and chips, I have a few recommendations around Melbourne. Hopefully, we can start traveling again soon and I can update this to include other states as well.
