Kings and Queens Fish and Chips

King and Queens Fish and Chips

Fish and Chips are definitely becoming a very popular gluten free item. Thankfully, I can also say that more and more stores are offering us Coeliac safe meals. With separate fryers, utensils and cross-contamination methods to set our minds at ease. Over in Camberwell, one such store is Kings and Queens fish and chips which has an almost entirely gluten free menu.

Located at 1/555 Riversdale road, Kings and Queens fish and chips is easily accessible by public transport. If you are driving there is some on-street parking as well. You’ll notice that I say almost entirely gluten free, that’s because their potato cakes are not safe but are fried in a separate fryer. Everything else on the menu is gluten free.

Naturally, when they opened I just had to try them out, so Matthew and I headed down one Saturday for lunch. If you’re not close by like us, they have a few places to sit and enjoy, or there is a park across the road. We decided to share a lunch pack, we ended up choosing The Couples  Basket ($40) with the Ice Queen salad.

The pack contains two pieces of fish (your choice), we went with your standard flake. Four pieces of calamari, a medium salad each and a medium chips. We also added in some onion rings, which is $1.50 for three. The batter was definitely awesome. As you can probably see in the photo the batter has herbs infused which adds a really lovely flavour. The batter itself was extremely crispy and crunchy. It was thoroughly aerated and wasn’t oily or soggy.

The fish itself was really well cooked, it tasted extremely fresh and just flaked apart. The calamari wasn’t rubbery and had a nice seasoning blend. The onion rings did seem to slip out of the batter a little but again were really tasty. As always chips are chips but these tasted quite clean and weren’t oily. With this meal pack, you can choose from a few different salads.

You can get some really tasty fish and chips from Kings and Queens. If they weren’t so far away I’d go there often, however it is a great spot to stop in if you are in the area. Prices are reasonable and the food is good and of course gluten free. What more could you ask for?

Hopefully, in the future they will provide some gluten free potato cakes for us, however, for now, I don’t think I missed them too much. Some kids might want them more than me though.
