Ocean Blue – Surimi Sea Sticks

For a long time people have been asking me if I knew of any Gluten Free faux crab sticks that could be used in Sushi. I have know about the Ocean Blue brand Surimi Sea Sticks for a while but I hadn’t personally seen them in stores. Until my friend Phil spotted them in the Chilled section of our local Woolworths. You can also pick them up in Coles and it seems that they are beginning to be stocked more regularly now. The pack will set you back $4.80. You’ll get two separately sealed packs with four sticks in each pack. As you can see from the below photo it is ready to eat and is labelled gluten free on the front. These are made in Spain, if you prefer Australian made products.

Let’s get straight into the ingredients; this contains Fish, Crustacea, and Egg. Ingredients include fish, cephalopod (Mollucus), modified starch, sunflower oil, salt, egg white powder, pea protein, crab flavouring, white wine extract, sugar, and colours. I haven’t really eaten a lot of sea sticks before; so I wasn’t sure what to expect. From the point of view who someone who has eaten sea sticks before they are really nice. Since I haven’t had them before, I wasn’t exactly sure what to do with them. Therefore, I just made Sushi.

They have so many layers that fall apart in your mouth; with a lovely ocean flavour. It is really hard to describe, it’s fishy, it’s a little salty; I think it’s quite nice. I can also image this cut up into pieces for a seafood salad with mayonnaise. Alternatively, you could deep fry them as well. In terms of texture, I thought they were perhaps a little slimy. However, since I am not usually a consumer I can’t say if that is normal or not. Once it is in Sushi you really don’t feel that at all. As to whether or not I will purchase them again. Since they aren’t a typical part of my diet I can’t say I’ll buy them all the time. However, now that I know they are an option, I will use them when the feeling pops up.

That’s it for the Ocean Blue Surimi Sea Sticks. I know a lot of you were having trouble finding them. Apparently, some people thought they were in the frozen section not the chilled area. I hope this little overview is helpful to you. If you are looking for more chilled meat style reviews head to the chilled and fresh page.

  1. I was also looking for Gluten Free faux crab sticks and good to know that Ocean Blue Surimi Sea Sticks are one of the favourites of many. I understand it is not easy to find them in stores, but if I get these then I will surely purchase them. I have seen many fish and chips Broadbeach cafes offering different kinds of fish and stuff, but these days most of them are closed. If i can get some food items of my choice it will be really satisfying. Well, I liked the review and your post was good. Thanks
