While in Adelaide there was one place that was at the top of my list to visit. The Duke of Brunswick became Adelaide’s first 100% gluten free pub earlier this year. Owner Simone had the vision to provide a community friendly atmosphere for all. So when, she realized that those with Coeliac Disease were unable to eat there due to cross contamination she started working on the 100% gluten free menu. Located at 207 Gilbert Street in Adelaide.

Everyone had told me that I must get the wings to start with. Since Brody and I love our hot wings we happily obliged. The Southern Fried Chicken Wings are served with hot sauce and a blue cheese sauce. There were eight pieces on the plate when it arrived with a decent helping of both the hot sauce and blue cheese sauce. The coating is crispy with a great flavour. The chicken is so tender you can strip it from the bone in one bite too. If you like that hot buffalo style sauce then you will love the building heat the hot sauce provides. Cool it off with a slightly tang from the blue cheese to balance the flavours. I’d order this again in a heart beat.

To go with the chicken wings we ordered the garlic bread ($8) starter as well. With a crispy crust and fluffy interior you can’t go wrong although I am a garlic fiend and thought it could use a touch more. It’s a lovely texture, light and airy with a decent helping of butter. Definitely another good way to start your meal.

For mains Brody opted for the Beef Ribs ($28). Tender meat with a rich flavour, it fell off the bone and the fork. There is a good serving of mash underneath it all which is creamy and well seasoned. Brody thought the asparagus was a little overcooked, personally I like it that way. The broccoli is blanched so retains some crunch as well. It’s a decent portion size and very filling.

I sat for a few minutes just taking the menu in. There was a lot to choose from. Eventually, with the help of you over on Instagram live I went with the DOB dog wih the lot ($22). You can get the standard as well which will only be $19. I have never seen a gluten free hot dog on a menu before, so I definitely wanted to highlight that fact. Starting with the bread it is the same as the garlic bread above. Well toasted so it has a crunchy exterior and fluffy on the inside. The best part though is that you can hold it in your hands to eat it. Inside there is a 9″ Vienna sausage that is very meaty and has good flavour. Add to that bacon, mustard, tomato sauce, jalapenos and more. Each mouthful was bursting with flavour and it was good. The meal comes with a decent side of fries which as I always say, chips are chips they’re crispy and yummy. The side of aioli was really eggy with a slight tang which worked well. No meal envy or regret with this dish.

Of course, we aren’t going to a gltuen free pub without getting dessert. Brody opted for their Sticky Date Pudding ($12). It’s a decent slab, has a good flavour and consistency, not overly sweet and with a side of vanilla bean ice cream to liven everything up. It’s exactly what you want in a sticky date pudding.

I on the other hand wanted to be adventurous so I went for the Raspberry Chia Bomb ($12). I’m not sure if it is a change in the dish that isn’t on the menu but the dish arrived without the pistachio toffee shards. It wasn’t a deal breaker though. What you’ll get is a decorative chocolate dome sitting on a raspberry drizzle with a side of that delicious vanilla bean ice cream. I couldn’t wait to crack into it.

When you do, you’ll be met with the raspberry chia explosion. It’s got a great tangy flavour with that chia pudding texture. It’s refreshing and works well with the chocolate shell. The berry flavour is a little tart and sweet though so use the vanilla bean ice cream to balance it all out. It’s an indulgent and surprising dessert that I think you should try at least once. I would happily eat it again and again though.

Next time we are in Adelaide, I’ll definitely be planning more visits for lunch and dinner. I know it is a favourite of the locals as well.
